Dogs That Look Like Wolves - Dogs That Look Like Wolf Hybrids
Q: Are your dogs wolves? Are you wolf breeders? Do you have wolf hybrids? Are you wolf hybrid breeders?
We occasionally get asked this question and no, absolutely not. Our dogs are purebred German Shepherd Dogs, however many of them appear very similar to wolves in coloration and not everyone realizes that German Shepherds come in MANY colors outside of the traditional black and tan saddle. In nature, wolves tend to be variations of sable, white, or black in coloration. These colors/patterns are also found in the German Shepherd breed as well. Some of our dogs will even appear as maskless German Shepherds, which are particularly wolf-like. In addition, our dogs are large German Shepherds, with a straighter backed than a typically found in AKC show dogs and so would be somewhat comparable in height/length to a wolf.
Estimated Body Weight: females: 60 to 80 pounds, males: 70 to 110 pounds
Head/Body Length: females: 4.5 to 6 feet (tip of nose to tip of tail), males: 5 to 6.5 feet
Height at Shoulder: 26 to 32 inches
Based on this information, many of our dogs would be at least somewhat comparable to the wolf in size. An example of our dogs would be pictured below, Ash, who is one of our oversized German Shepherds. Now at maturity, he measures 30" at the shoulder, 5 1/2 ft in length from nose to rump (not including tail) with a weight of around 145 pounds. He is a large boned German shepherd with a broad head and an impressive stature with a type we frequently produce.
We have produced some male puppies that are even LARGER and HEAVIER than him. On average a dog at a healthy weight (NOT fat!) from us ranges as follows:
Females: 80-100+ pounds at maturity, 25-28"+ at the shoulder
Males: 100-140+ pounds at maturity, 27-32+" at the shoulder
Even though Ash is a black and tan long coat that has a very "typical German Shepherd" coloration, people sometimes jokingly compare him to wolf when we are out or ask if he is a wolf hybrid. As stated above though, some of our dogs tend to look even more wolfish in coloration. A maskless German Shepherd can appear particularly wolf-like. As I always tell people, our dogs have the look of the wolf without the wolf! Examples are posted below.
Ash is now 145 pounds, and we have produced more than a few 140 pound German Shepherds as well, definitely comparable in size to wolves. As you can see in the slideshow above, we strive to produce dogs that are large, have a broad head, large bone structure, an "old fashioned" straight-backed appearance as well as a calm demeanor. Our dogs come in both the long coat as well as short coat varieties. While there is a comparison to be made that our dogs somewhat resemble wolves, they are purebred German Shepherds.
